A mid-year look at the foundation work taking shape behind the scenes.
Dear friends,
This edition is a mid-year check-in. Besides the steady stream of updates and improvements the first half of the year brought, even more has been taking shape out of sight, and this is the work we want to share more openly now.
We have been laying the foundation the whole app rests on:
- rebuilding how reminders work and moving the hard parts to the cloud
- building a new Android app so everyone has the same Prayminder
- deepening the privacy commitment that has shaped Prayminder from the start
Here is a closer look at each.
Steadier reminders, moving to the cloud
Prayer reminders are at the heart of Prayminder, and the way they can reshape an ordinary day around prayer is why we care so much about getting them right. We want yours to arrive dependably, to give each of your prayers a fair turn, and to bend to fit your own life.
Our cloud reminders have already proven themselves at better than 99.9% reliability. Until now the cloud has decided when your rotation reminders arrive while your device chose which prayer to surface. The next release moves that choice to the cloud as well, so it can look back over what it has shown you and give every prayer a fairer turn over time. We have rebuilt custom repeating reminders the same way, handing the genuinely hard parts to the cloud rather than to the small computer in your pocket, where many of the old bugs used to live.
Both pieces are built and in testing now. The practical result is that we can ship improvements faster, step in to resolve a problem for one person when something goes wrong, and hold steadier reliability for everyone. None of it changes where your prayers live. Every prayer you write stays on your own device, and the cloud works only with anonymous numbers that stand in for them, so it keeps your schedule running without ever seeing a word of what you pray. More about that below.
A brand new Android app, the same Prayminder for everyone
For a long time, the experience for people praying with us on Android has lagged behind the iOS app, and that is the part that weighed on us. We wanted everyone to have the same Prayminder, and closing that gap is what finally moved us to start over rather than keep patching what was already there.
So we built a completely new Android app from the ground up, on the latest native Android technologies. Everything people love on iOS is there too: the custom reminders, the stats, reading the Bible inside the app, and the care put into how it all looks and feels. It runs on the new cloud services from its very first day, and from here both platforms move forward together, so new work reaches everyone at once. The app is in its final testing now, and after the long wait we are glad to be putting it into your hands soon.
Privacy as the foundation for what comes next
When we started Prayminder, we chose to do things differently from the common playbook, which asks people to make an account before they can begin, locks the most useful features behind a paywall, and often processes personal data quietly for extra income. Our path is the opposite. You can use Prayminder without an account, everything in it is open to everyone so you give only what you are able to, and because your prayers never leave your device, we cannot see who you are or what you pray for.
This sits at the center of our values and it is not going to change. In a season when so much of the world reaches for optimization and efficiency, we hold to the values of the Kingdom, where growth is allowed to take its time, where a seed can sit a long while in the dark being watered with care before anything shows above the soil, and where the harvest still comes in full.
That same conviction shapes what comes next. We are continuing to strengthen how we handle your data, and at the same time we are beginning to work on something many of you have asked us for: a way to carry your prayers across your devices and to pray together with others, while we still do not know who you are or what you pray for. It is early and there is plenty left to work out, but privacy is the promise we keep, and it is becoming the ground we get to build new things on.
Looking ahead with thankfulness
Prayminder has always been, first of all, about your own life of prayer, and helping each person grow closer to God will always be what matters most to us. From there, much of the road ahead reaches outward as well, toward praying together and carrying prayer further into the world.
We move into the second half of the year with real excitement and a good deal of thankfulness that we get to do this at all. We trust that provision comes from God, that stepping forward in faith when we sense the Lord leading is enough even when the whole road is not yet visible, and that the harvest can be plentiful.
Thank you to everyone who has walked this journey with us, to those who give and support the mission, and to all of you who pray and fill the world with the beautiful incense of prayer. Let's cover the world in prayer.
Blessings,
